You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t. That is real freedom.

This is such an inspiring commencement speech!  I had to watch this video for my online Business Communication class. I believe we were asked to watch this video so we can be aware that in “adult life” when you have a real full time job, things start to become a routine.  Instead of having a natural default setting and being miserable with people and saying, “look at how repulsive they are,” there is always an alternative. A simple alternative could completely change the situation.

Although this video pertains to after college, I think it is a valuable lesson for the present. I believe a lot of the time people forget that they have the power to choose the way they think, and perceive situations.  Instead of being frustrated and selfish in a situation, it’s important to take a step back and wonder what other people are thinking.  Rather than having the attitude of “who are these people in my way” like the video mentioned in the grocery store, be consciously aware that they are probably not in the greatest mood either for whatever reason. This video was also a great reminder that you don’t always know what other people are going through, so it’s important to treat everyone with respect.

I am a firm believer that every negative has a positive, and I feel that people need to think about that more. Being average is easy, and I think it’s great knowing that you can always be above that. From this video, I took away that your life is all in the power of your own hands, and if you are aware enough, you can make decisions every day that allow you to be happy. I am happy that I watched this today because it was a nice reminder of how I have control of my own life, and now I can conquer my week!
